Als das Kind war
When the child was a child
Mikor a gyermek, gyermek volt
Als das Kind Kind war,
ging es mit hängenden Armen,
wollte der Bach sei ein Fluß,
der Fluß sei ein Strom,
und diese Pfütze das Meer.
Als das Kind Kind war,
wußte es nicht, daß es Kind war,
alles war ihm beseelt,
und alle Seelen waren eins.
Als das Kind Kind war,
hatte es von nichts eine Meinung,
hatte keine Gewohnheit,
When the child was a child,
It walked with its arms swinging,
wanted the brook to be a river,
the river to be a torrent,
and this puddle to be the sea.
When the child was a child,
it didn’t know it was a child,
everything was soulful,
and all souls were one.
When the child was a child,
it had no opinion about anything,
had no habits,
often sat cross-legged,
ran off suddenly,
had a cowlick in its hair,
and made no faces when photographed.
When the child was a child,
it was the time for these questions:
Why am I me and not you?
Why am I here and not there?
When did time begin and where does space end?
Is life under the sun not just a dream?
Is what I see, hear, and smell
only the illusion of a world before the world?
Is evil truly real?
Are there truly evil people?
How can it be that I, who I am,
didn’t exist before I came to be,
and someday, I, who I am,
will no longer be who I am?
When the child was a child,
it choked on spinach, peas,
rice pudding, and sautéed cauliflower,
and eats all of it now, and not just out of duty.
When the child was a child,
it awoke once in a strange bed,
and now does so again and again;
many people back then seemed beautiful,
and now only occasionally,
had a clear idea of paradise —
now can only vaguely sense it.
Could not imagine nothingness,
and today shudders at the thought.
It played with great enthusiasm,
and now spends itself fully but only in its work.
When the child was a child,
an apple and bread was enough for it,
and so it is even now.
When the child was a child,
berries rolled into its hand as if into a vessel,
and now still do,
fresh walnuts made its tongue raw,
and now still do.
Every mountain had the longing
for a higher mountain,
and every city, the longing
for a bigger one – and so it is still.
Reaching into the treetop
for cherries gave it a thrill
it feels even now.
It was shy around strangers,
and still is.
It waited for the first snow,
and still does.
It threw a stick like a lance
against a tree,
and it quivers there still.
Mikor a gyermek gyermek volt,
karját lóbálva sétált,
a patakból folyót akart,
a folyóból áradást,
a pocsolyából óceánt.
Mikor a gyermek gyermek volt,
nem tudta, hogy gyermek,
mindennek lelke volt,
és minden lélek egy.
Mikor a gyermek gyermek volt,
nem volt véleménye,
nem voltak szokásai,
törökülésben ült gyakran,
futott hirtelen,
Tényleg létezik a gonosz?
A zöld dió érdesítette nyelvét,
és ezt ma is érzi.
Minden hegy csúcsáról
még magasabba vágyott,
minden városban
nagyobbra, és ez is változatlan.
A fa csúcsán a cseresznyékért nyúlt
boldogan, s még ma is így van.
Félénk volt az idegenekkel,
és ez sem múlt el.
Várta az első havat,
és ma is alig várja.
Mikor a gyermek gyermek volt,
botot dobott lándzsaként a fára,
és az ma is rezeg ott.
